Lab tested, batch by batch: what is tested, who tests it, and how to check it.

Every batch of ProTYM Whey Isolate imported by MV Enterprises is tested by LGC, an independent laboratory, under the Informed Sport and Informed Protein certification programmes. This page explains what those tests cover, who runs them, and how to check the result for the tub in your hand.

The Phrase

What "lab tested" actually means.

On a supplement label, "lab tested" is one of the most common phrases and one of the least specific. On its own it does not say which laboratory did the testing, what was tested, whether the test covered the batch you bought, or whether anyone outside the brand can see the result. A brand can test a single sample once, print the phrase indefinitely, and technically be telling the truth.

So the phrase only means something when four questions have answers. Which laboratory? Which tests? Which batch? Can I check it myself? For ProTYM the answers are: LGC; banned-substance screening and protein-content verification; every production batch; and yes, using the batch number printed on the tub. The rest of this page sets out each answer.

Batch Level

Why testing has to happen on every batch.

Protein powder is manufactured in production runs, or batches. Contamination from shared equipment, a raw-material problem, or an under-dosed formulation affects a specific batch, not the product in general. A certificate for one batch therefore tells you nothing about a different batch, and a one-off test of a sample says nothing about the tub you bought months later.

That is why ProTYM testing is done per batch, before the batch is released. Each batch number is printed on the tub and on the certificate issued for that batch, so the two can be matched. It is also why a batch certificate carries a date of analysis and a laboratory reference number: those details let you confirm the document with the laboratory rather than take it on trust.

The Tests

What is tested on every ProTYM batch.

Two separate certification programmes, both run by LGC, apply to every batch of ProTYM Whey Isolate. They answer different questions, which is why the product carries both seals.

Informed Sport

Question answered: is this batch safe for a drug-tested athlete?

Every batch is screened for more than 250 substances prohibited in sport, including those on the WADA prohibited list, before it is released. LGC issues a certificate of compliance for each batch, and certified batches can be looked up in the public Informed Sport database.

Does not cover: whether the protein figure on the label is accurate.

Informed Protein

Question answered: is the protein declared on the label actually in the tub?

Verifies that the protein content stated on the label is present in the batch, and screens for non-protein nitrogen sources and free amino acids that can inflate a protein reading, the practice known as amino spiking.

Does not cover: banned-substance screening. That is the Informed Sport test.

The certificates are issued by LGC, not by ProTYM or MV Enterprises. MV Enterprises is the licensed Indian importer and distributor. It does not manufacture or test the product, and it publishes each certificate as received from the laboratory.

How to check the tub in your hand.

  1. Find the batch number and the QR code printed on your ProTYM tub.

  2. Open the certificate for that batch, either by scanning the QR code or from the list above, and check that the batch number matches.

  3. Confirm the batch independently at informed-sport.com.
